Quick Introduction We introduce HELENE, an optimization algorithm to accelerate fine-tuning LLMs with zeroth-order optimization by integrating an asymptotic Gauss-Newton-Bartlett (A-GNB) estimator for unbiased Hessian approximation and a layer-wise clipping mechanism for adaptive updates.
